Introduction / History

The Kpe, also known as Baakpe or closely associated with the larger Bakweri cluster of coastal Bantu peoples, are an ethnic community in the Southwest Region of Cameroon. They live primarily on and around the slopes of Mount Cameroon and in surrounding lowland areas where forests, fertile soils, and waterways support village life and traditional settlement patterns. These communities have long existed within the complex cultural tapestry of Cameroon's coastal peoples.

The Kpe speak the Mokpwe language, a Bantu language within the Sawabantu group. The language serves as a central marker of identity and is used in daily communication, oral history, and community interaction. Linguistic evidence and historical records reflect the long presence of Mokpwe-speaking peoples across the coastal plains and highlands of the region.
